Area 2
This area is just above the patio and the first plain-grass area. On one end there are 5 apple trees bunched up together. On the other is the washing line on a kind of a concrete platform.
Originally this part was not very distinctly different from the middle of the garden (area 3), from which it was vaguely separated by an impromptu-wall supported by a row of wooden planks.
I wanted to level-off the ground on both sides, so decided to build a stone-wall. I started working on it first, but it took the longest to complete.
I researched at lenght how to build supporting walls as I wanted the build to be safe and solid. I used recycled materials: people advertising for free sones or collecting anything suitable with the car on my way to work and back. This is one of the reasons for the time it took to buils this wall - just over 2 years, and I was lacking either materials or time (being in a full-time job 6 days a week and with two young children on my own).
In hindsight, the wall turn out bigger than what I planned or expected it to be. It also lifted this part of the garden significantly. It was obvious that the apple trees sufferfed a lot in the process and they are still recovering a few years later. Another unpleasant and unexpected result was that my neighbour now complains that all the rain water is draining into his garden and this summer I have to address this by building a drainage.
